A small win with "Giant" effect- The Eagles soar at the Meadowlands

The Eagles flew to a 36-21 victory against a now 0-5 Giants on their home turf this past Sunday, and whilst you can't judge a team on its ability to beat a team who concedes an average of 36 points per game, the win itself meant that the Eagles are now tied at the top of their division along with the Dallas Cowboys after they faced a heartbreaking loss against the Broncos. In comparison, both the Raiders and the Chargers are on 2-3 and they are tied for bottom in the AFC West. In that sense, this win was crucial.

What happened to the NFC "B"east?

ust over a month ago the NFC East promised to be the closest the division has been in years. It has always been one of the toughest in the league but this year was looking to be something truly special. Going into the season you had the Giants who are always strong, the Cowboys, the new redesigned Chip Kelly Eagles Offence and the return of RGIII and the Redskins. Going into week four and the NFC Beast has turned into something a lot...

RG-III or RG-Knee- why the Redskins are struggling this season

Over the past 4 years, 30 teams have started the season 0-2. None of them made the playoffs. Before the season began, there was a lot of speculation about the Washington Redksins and how Robert Griffin III would perform. But the fans remained optimistic following on from their first division win since 1999.
But two weeks have passed now and the Washington team have sank to a disappointing 0-2 record. Whilst that may not be the end of the world for fans, something that could be a cause for concern is the fact that they have allowed over 1000 yards in just two games. Here are the five reasons in my opinion, why the Redskins are struggling this season.

The name RG-Knee has been floating around since a big loss against rivals Philadelphia, the Redskins Quarterback has not been playing to the same level as most fans and players alike expected him too. This is probably down to the fact that he is still recovering from his Knee Surgery and is at about 80%. When you have a rookie of the year at the helm and a man who should be as dangerous as Mike Vick when it comes to scrambling and accuracy, he needs time in the pocket to complete a few passes and build up the confidence.
Unfortunately that hasn't been the case and both the Packers and the Eagles were getting to Griffin too easily halting any chance of a big play. When Robert finally got the ball away, it was either incomplete or worse an interception. 33 incompletions and 3 interceptions over 2 games isn't exactly a statistic that fantasy football players will be drooling over.
Griffin has shown a trend over both games to improve in the second half but at this stage it's too little too late. He HAS to attack from the start and work out how to get the ball away quickly so he has less time to get hit and more importantly reduce the risk of getting injured.

There is no point in being able to score on every drive if you concede the very next one. And having only scored 23 points in the opening two games, that means that if the Redskins had any chance of winning it had to come from the defense. Again this hasn't happened and Washington look vulnerable at the line. They have allowed an enormous 1023 yards over just two games and are currently 32nd in the rankings on defense. Something HAS to change.
Arguably they have had two very difficult games against a hurry up college offense in Philly which subjected them to a first half from hell giving them 53 snaps in one half and then traveled to a ticked off Green Bay who lost against the 49ers in week one and desperately wanted to get that first win on the board. But the defense look like they are being coordinated by a 9 year old!
There is a lot of confusion between plays and when they finally get to the quarterback through the blitz, the very next play the give up massive yardage and the momentum goes. The defense are in an SOS situation and need one solid game to get their season back underway. But facing the Lions next week and more importantly facing Megatron Calvin Johnson himself is not going to be an easy task. DeSean Jackson made mince meat of the Line Backers, Corners and Safety's so what exactly is a man who had an amazing game against Minnesota going to do? He has unrelenting pace and the ability to shake off some big tackles. Another area where the Redksins are struggling.
Not all of the blame can be placed on the defensive line, if anything it's the men behind the line who need to be making the big tackles. But none of them are succeeding, two games in a row the tackles are being shrugged off like it's nothing. The main flaw that I have spotted is that when entering a tackle the heads are down. How are you supposed to make a tackle if you aren't looking at what you're hitting? If a player spins away and you're admiring how green the turf looks then the chances of bringing him down are close to nothing.

The bottom line is that the entire team needs to find their form and find it quick if they have any hope of making the playoffs this year. There is a small glimmer of hope and that is that all three of the other teams in the NFC East lost this weekend so they just need a single win to be back within contention as no team is running away with the division at this early stage on a 2-0. Against an impressive Lions Defense, RG III needs to show us what he can do, we have seen how amazing he can play throughout the 2012 season but if you live in the past then you will stay there. Griffin needs to focus on the games ahead and get himself in the best shape he can as he fights his way through recovery.
As for the defense, well they need to start completing tackles, collapsing the pocket quicker and more importantly make the right calls at the right time. If they lose another 500 yards against the Lions I fear this could be the beginning of a very long and difficult road for the Redksins. It's do or die this Sunday.

NFL The Power Players- Week 1

So Week 1 has been and gone along with some amazing plays, surprising results and unforgettable moments by some of the greatest athletes on the planet. But if you could make a dream team of the week filling each position with any player from any team, who would you pick? I have listed my dream team of the week for the opening week in the NFL below, feel free to share yours in the comments.
The team is based on-
4 offensive players
4 defensive players

Followed by my top 5 teams of the week.

Quarterback- Peyton Manning
Team- Broncos
Yards-462
Touchdown passes-7
Pass completion- 27-42
Passer rating 141.1

There was simply no better man to run an offence this weekend. Even more astounding, these statistics were recorded against the 2012 superbowl champions, the Baltimore Ravens. Manning lead his team to a more than impressive victory and has made a big statement that he wants to go all the way this season.

Running Back- LeSean McCoy
Team- Eagles
Yards-184
Carries-34
Touchdowns-1
Average- 5.9

Shady McCoy returned to the field with a bang last night in Washington aiding the Eagles to beat the divisional champions 33-27. The new Chip Kelly offence suits both LeSean and Mike Vick so well as it is based around high tempo, short passes and runs. McCoy showed us exactly how dangerous this new College style offence is as he carried for 184 yards, constantly breaking through the Redskins defense who simply could not contain him. If you need a running back for your fantasy team this season, this is your guy!

Wide Receiver- Anquan Boldin

Team- 49ers
Receptions-13
Yards-208
Touchdowns-1

What a way to debut for a new team, Anquan Boldin helped Colin Kaepernick defeat the Green Bay Packers in what was simply an amazing matchup. Boldin and Kaepernick have a lot of chemistry and can easily be compared to the likes of Brady and Gronkowski. Boldin could be set for a big first season at San Francisco.

Tight End- Jared Cook
Team- Rams
Receptions-7
Yards-141
Touchdowns-2

For the first time in years, the Rams go 1-0 in their season opener. A lot of this was down to the performance of tight end Jared Cook who did exactly what a Tight End should be doing and picking up big yards when all receivers are locked down. Jared was exceptional bringing in two touchdowns. He looked very athletic right from the get go with a massive 47 yard catch and looked like superman when he scored his first of the day flying over the pylon.

Outside Linebacker- Justin Houston
Team- Chiefs
Tackles-5
Sacks-3
Forced Fumbles-0

The Chiefs started their 2013 campaign the right way with a win over the Jaguars and a lot of that came down to some brilliant defensive work. Linebacker Justin Houston sacked the Quarterback 3 times along with making 5 tackles. Not only does this put him at the top of the scoreboard for most sacks in the league but it sends a clear message that the 24 year old means business.

Safety- LaRon Landry
Team-Colts
Tackles-15
Sacks-0
Forced Fumbles-0

LaRon was simply outstanding last night, the colts were good on offence scoring in 3 of the 4 quarters but it was Landry who did all the damage on Defense, preventing any attack that came his way with a massive 15 tackles against the Oakland Raiders. He was quick, decisive and more importantly didn't give away any silly penalties. A very mature and steady mindset is needed to play the Safety position, and LaRon is at the top of his game.

Defensive Back- Dimitri Patterson
Team- Dolphins
Sacks-0
Interceptions-2
Interception yards-2
Tackles-2

Ex Eagle Dimitri Patterson's 7th season in the NFL got underway this weekend and to mark such an occasion, the Defensive back made two interceptions and became the heart of the Dolphins defense. The line came alive after the first but as soon as Dimitri made the second Interception it was clear that the defense was more than fired up and ready to get the ball back in their control. The end result, a 23-10 victory.

Corner Back- Charles Tillman
Team- Bears
Sacks-0
Interceptions-2
Interception yards-41
Tackles-7

Possibly the most up and down game of the weekend came from 11 season veteran Charles Tillman. From 2 interceptions and a 41 yard return one minute to an entire defensive series spent on the sidelines to get hydrated. The team had nothing but praise for Charles but it is difficult to ignore the troubles he had holding off Green who had 9 receptions for 162 yards with 2 touchdowns. But overall, the 7 tackles he made along with two big interceptions meant that he played a vital role in the Bears opening game.

NFL The Power 5:- teams to keep a close eye on this season

Football season is almost upon us with pre-season games hitting their fourth and final week. Now Pre-Season isn't a fully accurate representation of what we could see in the NFL but there are some encouraging signs and some teams who will most definitely be on the hunt for the Lombardi trophy this season.

 5) Miami Dolphins
Like many in their debut season, Ryan Tannehill showed glimpses of greatness. In week 4 against the Arizona Cardinals, Tannehill threw for a very impressive 431 yards whilst in others he simply could not deliver. But overall, the rookie out of Texas also became the fifth quarterback in team history to surpass 3,000 passing yards in a season. Couple that with the addition of receiver Mike Wallace and there is no reason why the Dolphins can't be one of the most intimidating offences in the NFL and challenging for a play off spot at the end of the season.

4) Detroit Lions
The Lions have had a great pre season so far including a demolishing victory over the Patriots. Matt Stafford has been on unrelenting form as of late and is going to be one of the most powerful quarterbacks in the NFL this season. Calvin Johnson has the potential as he always does to make some of the most important catches a receiver can make a long with some of the most impressive. If LeShoure can avoid injury and Reggie Bush can chip in where needed, this could be the balance the offence so desperately craved last year.
The team suffered a horrible record last season but with the NFC West becoming one of the most unpredictable divisions in the league, this could be the year they return to the top.

3)San Fransisco
So close yet so far, the 49ers will be looking to come back with a vengance this season as they look to return to the Superbowl for the second year running. You could argue that out of the big 4 Quarterbacks going into this season, (Kaepernick, RGIII, Andrew Luck, Russell Wilson) that The Nevada star comes the most equipped. With a Bazooka for an arm and the agility of a Moto GP rider, Colin is always going to be a threat no matter what defensive line you put in front of him.
The defense is also going to be extremely fired up. For the third year running the line will compete as one of the best in the league, not just the division or the conference, the league. Eric Reid will start as free safety in week 1, and for the LSU rookie this could be the opportunity he needs. With one of the best defensive units in the league, he can learn so much and really take the first step on the road to greatness.
There are not many teams in the NFL where you look at them and expect them to make the play offs year upon year yet the 49ers constantly exceed our expectations with demolishing defeats and sheer fire to make the play offs and ultimately lift the Lombardi trophy.

2) Seattle
If there really is a war forming between the Seahawks and the 49ers in the NFC West then Two words are going to turn it into a nuclear battle, Russell Wilson. He was absolutely sensational last year, completing 64 percent of his passes for 26 touchdowns against 10 interceptions for a 100 passer rating. Now THAT does not come easy in your first season as a QB. So just how much of an impact did he make? The Seahawks posted an 11-5 record in 2012, the third most wins in franchise history and went undefeated at home for only the third time in franchise history.
It isn't all down to Wilson however, the defense who started with a 4-4 record helped turn the season around to lose just one more game of the remaining 8. With the signing of nickel corner Antoine Winfield as well, the Seahawks are entering 2013 with VERY few weaknesses.

1) Philadelphia
Okay so the Eagles may not be Superbowl material just year but with the departure of head coach Andy Reid and the arrival of ex Oregon coach Chip Kelly, it's clear to see in the pre season alone that the Eagles offence has been completely reformed. Every play has the ability to turn into the pace seen in a 2 minute offence with a consistent run of first downs and the defense are no longer left picking up pieces but in face helping to lead the charge to restore the Eagles to their former glory.
Kelly named Vick as the starting QB this season and Mike himself has said all pre season long that he has nothing but praise for the new playing style and you can see this in his opening pre season games. Vicks accuracy and ability to out run most defensive players helps to slot him in perfectly to this new playbook.
Nick Foles the man who replaced the injured Vick last season will sit in at number two but it seems he reacted to the news of not getting the number one spot just as Chip intended as he completed 10/11 throws against the Jaguars helping the Eagles reach a 31-24 victory.
McCoy is also looking as dangerous as ever along with tight end Celek and the ever impressive DeSean Jackson, this could be the year the Eagles look competitive again. But to do that they need to overthrow the highly rated Redskins in week one of the regular season in the NFC East rivalry game.

Top 5 picks for Webber's replacement in 2014.

Yesterday Red Bull announced that they have extended triple world champion Sebastian Vettel's contract until the end of the 2015 season. Whilst this is great for the German it does surface the question of if Mark Webber leaves then who will be his replacement? It is a widespread rumour  that the Aussie will be moving to the World Endurance Championship driving for Porsche next season and whilst Webber has not 100% confirmed or denied this rumour, the events of the 2013 season thus far are certainly hinting at a departure from the sport.

So what happens to Red Bull if Webber leaves? The answer is simple, they need to find a replacement who will deliver the same if not better performances and someone who could be a long term number 2 driver to support Sebastian. Below I have listed my top 5 picks for the seat if Mark were to leave and the reasons why.

5.) Nico Hulkenberg:

The German Sauber driver has turned a lot of heads over the past couple of seasons. With a career highest of fourth position and a pole in Brazil 2010, Nico has proved that he has potential. His 2013 season however is not as successful thus far. Picking up just 5 points from the opening 7 rounds (however that's all of the points Sauber have scored this year) If Hulkenberg wants to be considered for the Red Bull seat next season and doesn't quite have the car for consistent points finishes, what he needs to do is attack and show the world that despite the car not being as competitive as it has been in previous years, he can still fight for the lower points and have some exciting battles on the circuit. But with his talent and what he have already seen from him, I
wouldn't write him off just yet.

4.) Paul Di Resta

Since his debut in 2011, Paul Di Resta has continued to improve and impress as his career goes on. 34 points this season alone out of the teams total of 51 and a season best of fourth in Bahrain, Di Resta again is looking very strong in a Force India. The ever competitive midfield in Formula One is where you can expect to see the Scotsman at his best, with a driving style that combines aggression with calmness he has a mature mindset and coming from DTM, it's easy to see how the skills needed to run bumper to bumper and be cool calm and collected when in group racing have transpired into F1.

3.) Kimi Raikkonen

Having won the opening round of the season, the Iceman was out to win a championship and he had made that point crystal clear looking at his race results. Three second places in a row saw him move up to second in the championship whilst teammate Grosjean struggled to get the consistency needed to support Kimi and aid Lotus's Constructors bid, much like Alonso and Piquet JR partnership at Renault a few years back. But the key here is that over the past two seasons Kimi has been with Lotus, he has taken 11 podiums and 2 victories. The only issue here is that I don't think the partnership would work. It would mirror the Alonso and Hamilton McLaren partnership in 2007, two drivers who want the spotlight with the team backing their "Golden Boy". This could even be the case at Red Bull now following the Multi 21 incident and the numerous other encounters the two teammates have had in the past. As good as Raikkonen would be in a Red Bull, I just feel that he is too dominant to be a number 2 driver, team orders can make or break a drivers championship and if Raikkonen had to yield to allow Vettel to pick up some crucial points for the championship ending his own, would he?

2.) Daniel Ricciardo & John-Eric Vergne

Yes that's right I've chosen two drivers for number two. Toro Rosso was the proving ground for Sebastian Vettel in 2008. He took his first victory for the Red Bull sister team at Monza that year and now he's a triple world champion. No other driver however has been able to achieve the same feat or indeed anywhere close. Sebastian Bourdais and Jaimie Algesuari are just a couple of names to mention. But Daniel Ricciardo looks like he could be the man to change that. However in doing so, he needs to out qualify and finish better than his team mate Vergne who has been on a great tun lately. Red Bull boss Christian Horner has said  "Daniel is a very, very talented driver. He has come from the Red Bull junior programme and has done a great job. We have an eye on him. "We're also looking at what Jean-Eric Vergne is doing, and it's nice to see the progress they're making." Vergne picked up a fantastic result this weekend at Canada finishing in a career best of 6th position. The Toro Rosso pair are alternating who is quicker almost every race now and it will be very interesting to see if Red Bull choose Daniel or John for the 2014 seat.

1.) Nico Rosberg

Three pole positions and a victory are the way Nico Rosberg has started the opening half of his season. Alongside his new teammate Lewis Hamilton who is signed at Mercedes until 2016, Rosberg has been on fire as of late. His learning curve over the past five years or so has been great to watch as his totals now add up to two race wins and four pole positions with the potential for many more. Often considered the nice guy of Formula One,  the 28 year old in my eyes would be the perfect replacement for Webber. Still relatively young, quick, consistent and smart. He does not often go for moves unless he knows 100% that they will pay off. He respects team orders (Malaysia this year is a good example however he made his feelings clear to the team) and works very well as a second driver.

Only time will tell who Christian chooses as his new number two driver but there is a lot of speculation circling at the moment, the next few races in particular will perhaps make things a little clearer but we need to wait until the end of the season for a more realistic idea of who the driver could be.
Who would you choose if you were in Horners position? Leave your thoughts in the comments below or tweet them to me @LiamJSimRacing

My Top 5 Monaco Moments

Monaco, the jewel in the crown for the Formula One season. A race which every driver wants to win. It carries such a reputation with it when legends such as Senna and Graham Hill dominated the track year after year. But the streets of Monte Carlo can often show another side to a driver. A side which provokes hatred or love from the spectators and a side which can earn you a place in the hall of fame, or the hall of shame.
These are my personal top 5 Monaco moments.

Number 5:- Triumphant Trulli (2004)
Jarno Trulli had always shown that he had a considerable amount of pace inside his Renault R24 but could never tick that final box of winning a Grand Prix. So, how do you go about winning your first Formula One Race? The answer, at the streets of Monaco in 2004. The Italian took a mighty pole position from Jenson Button and was looking to make it a perfect weekend in one of the most eventful races of the season. With only 9 drivers finishing it almost became like a last man standing event! Alonso, Michael Schumacher and both Mclarens had all retired along with the other 9 drivers who couldn't make it to the end. But it was the patience and the perfect strategy that saw Jarno Trulli break the spell of Ferrari and Michael Schumacher and show the world that they can be beaten. It was to be his only ever victory in Formula One, but he did it on the grandest stage of them all.

Number 4:- Schumacher's true colors shine through (2006)

A race dominated by spaniard Fernando Alonso and the news dominated by the antics of 7 time World Champion Michael Schumacher. At the end of qualifying Michael had pole position within reach, but Fernando was flying around the streets of Monte Carlo and in the final minute of the session, the German parked his car into the penultimate corner, stopping the session and seeing him keep his pole position.
After the session he claimed that he simply locked his brakes and almost hit the barrier, but the onboard footage was enough to see that this was no accident. This effort to keep his pole position had the reverse effect. Michael started from the very back of the grid
Alonso was able to keep his lead during the race and cross the line  to win his first of two Monaco Grand Prix's to date. Michael still defied the odds and from 22nd on the grid brought his Ferrari home in 5th place at least getting some points for the team. But this impressive drive has been still over shadowed to this day by his actions at Rascasse.

Number 3:- A Fairytale ending (2008)

One of the most eventful races in recent memory saw Lewis Hamilton take his first ever Monaco win.
After Massa dominated qualifying in a dry session, the heavens opened the next day, meaning drivers would start the race on Wet tyres. The first pit stop came on lap 6. No this was not down to a Pirelli tyre wear pit stop, but for Lewis Hamilton who had touched the wall on the exit of Tabac picking up a puncture. The Mclaren team tried something extremely risky and fitted the Intermediates on the car. He came out in fifth due to the field being spread out all over the circuit and fate played into his hands nicely. Massa was running away with the race until Coulthard and Bourdais collided on lap 8. The safety car was brought out and all of his hard work was lost.

Later on saw Nico Rosbergs massive incident at the swimming pool again bringing out the safety car. But just as the fans thought the action was coming to a close, Kimi Raikkonen lost control of his Ferrari exiting the tunnel and hitting the back of Sutil who was up until that point having a sensational race.

But at the end of the race it was Lewis Hamilton who at one point looked like he stood no chance of finishing in the top 5, came through and won the race. His first Monaco GP win was delivered in style.

Number 2:- "Sennasational" (1992)

Nigel Mansell in 1992 was tipped to win the championship. His Williams-Renault was the fastest car on the grid and his driving was relentless. But none of that mattered at Monaco. Mansell was dominating the race until the final stint. A loose wheel nut forced him to pit in, bringing him out behind one of the only men to give him the race of a lifetime– Ayrton Senna. It took just two laps of Mansell coming out behind Ayrton for the lead to be crushed from six seconds to two. He then spent the last five laps desperately trying to get past, ducking and diving at every possible opportunity. Corner after corner Nigel tried his absolute best to push past the young charger but Senna was too smart that day. He took the chequered flag for the fifth time as a winner in Monaco and his fifth Monaco win, equalling the record of British racing icon Graham Hill. One he would beat year later.

Number 1:- An underdog story (1996)

My personal favorite moment in all of Monaco's exciting history has to be the year where Olivier Panis took his first and only Grand Prix win. In  races which see the attrition rate sky rocket, the winner is normally the man that keeps his nose clean, his head down and drives his own race. This was proven once again at the Monaco Grand Prix, 1996.
The race started on a drying track and the odds favored the Pole sitter Michael Schumacher and his rival Damon Hill who was keen to win at Monaco like his father before him.The two sat on the front row but the Germans race ended much quicker than he imagined as he crashed heavily in the opening stint. Hill realised the opportunity he had  and continued to lead through the race until his engine suffered a failure which was rare for the team.
Jean Alesi was granted the lead but it was almost like every driver in the lead was cursed as Jean later retied with a suspension failure.
Panis was now in the lead in his Ligier and all he had to do was stay in front of David Coulthard. In a dash to the line Panis took the chequered flag and won his only ever Grand prix race, and Ligiers first in 15 years. Only 4 cars finished out of 22 starters making it one of the most exciting races in Monaco history.
